i am not sure if that is all, so some more guys may be added. other than that, like every year, many of our artists are stopping by randomly to say hello.

FROM MY MIND TO REALITY WITHOUT MISSING A BEAT.
NOT EVEN THE SKY IS THE LIMIT!
Peter posted on Friday, 22-02-08 14:46
No other company can do this??? Well it depends on what you mean by "this". For others not to be misguided I have to say that quite a few cymbal companies allow custom orders where you set the specifics and they do it for you with or without extra % of the price for the cymbal.
norbert saemann posted on Friday, 22-02-08 15:42
peter is probably totally right with what he says. even though i dont know what exactly other companies allow as far as custom orders are concerned, i assume that they offer them in order to stay competetive in the global market.
Peter posted on Saturday, 23-02-08 22:23
For example what other companies don't do/have are for example the best trash-hats on the market ;-)
I sure do love em ;)
Norbert, just one quick off-topic question. Are the designer cymbal bags now in the 22" size?? The only reason I already didn't bought one was the 21" size. Thanks...
Peter posted on Saturday, 23-02-08 22:35
Oops twice posting but other companies like S or P do allow some really drastical prototypes to be made for anyone who's willing to pay the 20-30 % surcharge. It's a good question why to have this kind of a service/product. It would be great to see a deeper analysis with all the possible numbers available (i'm a manager - cost analysis/controlling is my primary job). The S company never had a surcharge before but now they have and it's 20%. I think it's more of a tactic to have less orders than to actually have the custom cymbal service more profitable. Anyway I used the service of custom cymbals twice and I would love to have this option available in the future :D
norbert saemann posted on Monday, 25-02-08 12:11
hi peter,
yes the designer cymbal bags are now 22" in size.
norbert saemann posted on Monday, 25-02-08 12:48
ok peter, so now about your other question. first of all, there are custom cymbals, and real custom cymbals. what i mean with that is that you can of course have a standard ride, and custom-request to have rivets mounted into the cymbal. or, the custom-request could be to have a brilliant finish on a cymbal which normally is not brilliant finished. that for us is easy to accomplish, but requires extra labour. with trevor's cymbals that was the case. he wanted extra thin cymbals. thats something which is not too difficult to accomplish from a manufacturing point-of-view. now, with real custom requests, its different. such a request could be to have a cymbal that sounds "darker", but with a "shorter" decay, and "less" overtones, yet "explosive". those "words" are subjective impressions and mean something different to every drummer. trying to accomplish those requests from a manufacturing point-of-view requires a large amount of extra labour. and chances are high that the cymbal would not sound like what the customer had in mind in the beginning, because of everyone's subjective impressions of sound. you say you are a manager for cost analysing and controlling. so i am sure you can understand that the real costs for those kind of custom efforts can't be determined exactly, but would exceed 20% by far. what i am trying to say is that it's impossible to generalize the extra costs for custom cymbals. it always is a matter of what the custom work exactly includes. but one thing is for sure: it does exceed 20% by far. i hope this answers your question?
Peter posted on Monday, 25-02-08 22:15
Exactly that's what I was trying to point to that it must be over 20% but taking in mind all the other factors like the number of the custom cymbals requested-produced and then taking into account all other costs then those 20% does not probably mean anything of high importance so it could have stayed on the 0% level. But you can take those 20% and put the 20% into anything so those 20% might be important for something. Hehe ok enough I'm just speculating about the nature of the will to add the surcharge. We also do weird things with the prices. Sometimes it works sometimes it don't. That's simply market ;-) Thanks for the 22" nfo. Already waiting for musik-produktiv to have it on their stock.

Hello Norbert.
I made a great mistake - as I found later, this video was added in february 2008. But as it written in the description it was filmed around year 2000. So I think it may be Alien Hihats, which were produced by Meinl several years ago. Sorry for disturbing you.

p.s. Don't you know, is it possible to buy new 8" Alien Hihats ?
Benjamin Davis posted on Sunday, 23-03-08 15:33
Hi Chris,
I am curious: I wrote an email to Meinl concerning the weight of their 'dark' byzance cymbals. I also left the question on your blog after your discussion of weights. So far no response. What is the best way to get this answered?
Thanks!
Andi posted on Monday, 24-03-08 10:17
Hi Benjamin,
I know that norbert had a bad cold last week and therefore wasn't able to answer your question.
As far as I know Norbert will be back on tuesday (tomorrow)
I guess the dark cymbals are medium to heavy weight. Unfortunately I don't know this for sure 'cause I don't play the dark series from byzance...
So I think you get this answered either tomorrow or within the next few days.
greets,
andi

Hello Norbert!
I met you up at NAMM (along with the other 1thousand drummers you probably met=). Well I hope you're feeling better (i read about it in the last blog).
I dont know if my question will be like the "Phone call" you received, but it's regarding my Alien Hats. I've had them for a little while now and the pins that hold the jingles in place have started to break off. I was wondering how I could fix these and also how the Jingle Chinas held on to the jingles so well after Thomas unleashes Metal Spankings on it. Thanks in advanced. See you at PASIC?
norbert saemann posted on Tuesday, 25-03-08 14:48
hi marcus,
ha! good question. the box is more or less 100% sound proof. so no noise comes out. this also means that no noise can come in either. so inside the box, its totally quiet. all you do is that you see what is going on outside, but you can not hear anything. once you finish a performance, you see people clap, but you cant hear them. this means that you feel a little bit detached from what is going on around you, but usually its great fun to play in there.
norbert saemann posted on Tuesday, 25-03-08 14:51
hi isaias,
thanks, yes i feel better now again finally. i suggest that you replace the rivets with which the jingles are attached to the bottom. the rivets we use is a standard model and you can get similar rivets at any metal-store or homedepot.
norbert saemann posted on Tuesday, 25-03-08 14:58
hi benjamin,
yes, you are right. the weights of the dark hats can be described as medium. the regular byzance medium hats do have the same weight.

That's pretty low of that artist, whoever it was. I remember something similar four, five years ago with a high-profile former Meinl artist, and that wasn't pleasant.
I used to be a Meinl artist, but when it became clear that I wasn't working enough to justify occupying a spot that should have been given to someone more deserving I told Chris I was leaving. I don't really need a deal to play Meinl, their cymbals speak for themselves.

Having just purchased the final Meinl cymbal for my kit, Classic 14" crash, I am looking forward to playing our next gig with a complete set of Meinl cymbals. They give me exactly the sounds I need to compliment the bands music style.
See my kit on the bnads web site.

Hi,

in diesem sinne, nochmal sorry !

hi norbert,
just drop a quick note here in the blog to get the promo banner for my music school.
I´m teaching in a drum/music school based in the southern part of germany with about 55drum students...and the number is accelerating;)
We have about three drum instructors all playing MEINL cymbals...also our drumsheds are equipped with tama drums and meinl cymbals, so the banner would fit the school more than beautifully!
We would hang it in our biggest drumshed( about 40sqf) where all the workshops, clinics and recordings take place....
So here are the facts....hope we will get the thing!

hello norbert!
I'v got two short questions, maybe you are able to help me out!
I saw some Generation X Marco Minneman Alien hi-hats 10"on ebay. What are these hi-hats, are they custom made?If so, they are not stamped with the "Custom Cymbal Shop" logo, in fact, they are stamped like they are a normal product in the Generation X line. Are these coming out, because they look quite interesting?
The second one...do you make custom cymbals for just everyone?I saw some at a website, custom made for them.If so,what are you charging for them?
Thanks!
Marcus
marcus posted on Thursday, 03-07-08 22:33
Sorry, I forgot something...
What happend to some of the videos on here, they are like, gone?
norbert posted on Friday, 04-07-08 10:14
hi marcus,
the hihats you saw on ebay were marco's signature hihats we made back then when marco was still endorsing our cymbals. available have been an 8" - 10" and 12" alien hihat. when marco changed cymbal company, we stopped making them. the hihats you saw on ebay are from back then.
whether or not we make custom cymbals depends on what the customer wants to have. there is no general extra charge for a custom cymbal, it always depends on the individual case. again, first we must know what the customer has in mind for the cymbal, then we decide whether or not we make it, and what it would cost. in any case, the deal has to be made through a dealer. we are not selling directly.
and last but not least, we had to take down some of the videos from our site for several reasons. we are working on getting them back on the site as soon as possible.
greetings - and have a great weekend marcus :-)
- norbert
marcus posted on Saturday, 05-07-08 12:06

Thanks, and, oh...I wish you a great weekend too, Norbert!

hi max, yes you need tickets to attend the festival. everything you need to know is on meinldrumfestival.com. you can also purchase the tickets there. if you need any help, let me know.
norbert posted on Monday, 07-07-08 12:32
hello marcus, i think that totally depends on what style of music you want to play with them? all three have a signicifant sound. the 8" and 10" are very sharp and cutting. the 12" has jingles attached to the bottom (if they havent fallen of yet), so their sound also sticks out from all other cymbals. they are great effect hats thats for sure.
about the dark-flat-ride: from which dealer do you normally buy your cymbals?
marcus posted on Monday, 07-07-08 22:43
Well, I just bought the 10" Alien hats for 90 USDollars, I think thats a deal?-usually buy my cymbals from "Musik Produktiv Wiener Neustadt" bei Wien, da fällt mir gerade ein das ich ja gar nicht englisch reden muss! :) hehe...
norbert posted on Tuesday, 08-07-08 08:56
yes, we could talk in german too, but then nobody else would understand it. so lets keep on using english. congrats to the alien hats. i will be in touch about the flat ride later on.

What cymbals were aaron using?
I noticed a Mb20 on the right of his kit, SO its not the same as your on the site.
Chris Brewer posted on Friday, 29-08-08 16:23
Hi Jonathan,
Good eye!
Aaron usually plays what is listed on our website.
However, every once in awhile after breaking some cymbals on tour, he'll use some backup cymbals he carries with him until he can receive his usual replacements from us here at Meinl USA. Usually he always has what he needs, but in this instance, he enjoyed experimenting with the slight variation in cymbals for a gig or two, so he just went with it.
The pictures you have seen are a great example of this situation. The cymbals that he is playing that are not on the website, such as the Mb20 crash you see and the Byzance 15" hats were merely some extras he had that worked until I got him some more of his usual cymbals.
Thanks for reading. It's great to know people are actually paying attention! :-)

Vaya Con Dios.

Hello, Sorry but I cannot find any contact information for meinl. I have a 7 inch splash (yes, 7 inch) byzance.
I do not see that as a listed product yet I have one and its stamped 7inch.
I am trying to liquidate this and people think I am lying cause they dont see this as a product.
Can you help me explain? Thanks
norbert posted on Wednesday, 04-02-09 12:24
hi david,
we used to make 7" splashes in our byzance range, correct. right now we dont offer them anymore. that is why you cant find them on our website or catalog. hope this info helps.

Hello, I was looking for contact info as well... Just for a bit of advice on a frustrating situation. Yesterday I noticed a crack going around the base of the bell on my MB20 18" crash. (Oh No!!!) I am pretty surprised because I've had my other MB20 crash and ride much longer with nothing like this happening. All your cymbals have been good, I was having such great experience with Meinl that I've been slowly switching over. I also don't understand because I've only cracked one cymbal years ago, a sabian B8, notorious for cracking after being beat on by new drummers. In fact, I've maybe broken one stick since I've bought the cymbal, and I don't tighten my cymbals too much... I'm not complaining, I'm just wondering if there is anything I can do to save it, at least until I can afford an exact replacement. I heard rumors about epoxy in the crack...any advice?
Tyrel

Costanza posted on Tuesday, 24-03-09 07:13
Hey Norbert, not sure that this is totally on topic but not sure where else to ask. I recently (past two months) bought a meinl byzance traditional medium 20" ride. I ordered it from a local guitar center and got it about two weeks later. Sadly about 5 days after playing the cymbal it cracked, right on the edge about half an inch. I had hoped it was a faulty cymbal so i returned it and ordered a new one, receiving it a week later. Sadly, literally within the first 20 minutes of playing my ride, it cracked again the same exact way. I returned it and was advised to get something in store, and very reluctantly, i did. I LOVE the meinl sound, amazing cutting power and musicality of the cymbals, and personally think no other company compares. But i can not help but wonder what was wrong? I was using the ride as a crash for the more powerful sound it gave (about 90% of the time) as i see quite a few other artists, some meinl artists, do. I was using proper cymbal striking technique and even holding back more than usual (i am a fairly hard hitter when i get into it). My question is, is there something i did wrong to my cymbal? I would so badly like to go pick up another meinl today but i am somewhat reluctant because of my experience. I have played with this new ride for about a month now and it has showed no signs of cracking, but it's sound pails in comparison to meinl. I would appreciate any help, tips or information that would shed light on this matter.
Thanks

Hey Norbert, I think it would be a really cool idea to have a section of old and discontinued lines. I have 2 original Soundcaster crashes that aren't being made anymore and I also have an old Raker china too. Just thought it'd be a fun idea!
By the way, I just got my shipment of 7 new Meinls, all of them sound amazing!

i am a huge fan of the mb10 series.
i play all kinds of music & the mb10 cymbals compliments the music very well,
the crashes & splashes are bright & react very fast
the ride & hats are very clear & you are able to get multiple tones from them. & the chinas are powerful but not to powerful. in my opinion mb10 is the best buy if you are on a budget.

I'm not a drummer, but as a bassist, I totally agree.
I particularly enjoy playing with one drummer friend who, while adding whatever funky licks and rhythm shifts, always maintains a straight 2 + 4 at the same time. It makes the other stuff he does so much more attractive.

Hi everybody,
now that is really quite a surprise :-(
At the moment I'm still playing cymbals of that Canadian company you mentioned and I've been playing them for more than 10 years - however I'd like to switch to that Franconian (*lol*) company soon - just the other way than Christoph did... 'coz every time I'm in a music store (or at the Frankfurt Music Fair) I find those "Franconian cymbals" most inspiring... now seriously: what you guys have created in sounds over the last years is just awesome...!! :-) So I'll replace my current canadian cymbal setup cymbal by cymbal by a franconian one *lol*

You guys at Meinl have got this right in EVERY aspect! AWESOME gear, Awesome Reps!
