The Meinl Cymbal Think Tank Rolls On

brainstorming

today was one of those days where i basically did not leave our conference room for longer than three minutes. my workmates chris brewer from meinl usa, udo, and stefan sat down on a table and discussed all of the new product ideas for next year. tomorrow we'll do the same thing brainstorming and deciding about our future marketing focus. all of that is essentially determing our course for at least the next year. i am feeling somehow mentally tired after so long and intense meeting marathons like that, but i know for sure that only good stuff is going to come from it.

now i will enjoy a nice dinner and a few drinks. i have a feeling that chris and i will probably just keep on talking about business issues. oh well, that's how we are :-)

Norbert, is there any chance of a deeper bell blast ride on the horizon? one thing that i crave in a ride is just like the bell blast but deeper...like a 22in heavy version of it...but that is just me.

There is one product I would like to see, try and own. A Byzance Dark China. I think that would be an amazing cymbal.

@ phillip
thanks for the suggestion. i will make a note of it will bring it up in our next meetings.

Norbert, what I really miss, are more Meinl Cymbals for Percussionist, Cajon-Players and for acoustic context.

I would wish for Percussionist (playable by hand):
- 10\" Candela/Byzance Dry sanblasted Splash
(the \"old\" Byzance Dry sandblasted 10\" Splash is my favorite one)
- a 12\" Candela Splash
- a 16\" Candela China
- more effects (for instance like the Hammerax Cymbals)

I miss definitely a Meinl Byzance 12\" or 13\" HiHat for Cajon-Players. This Hihat should be playable with Rods, Brushes and even Fingers. Some Cajon players use for instance the Paiste Noise Works Fizzle Hat. Mmm, but I don\'t like the sound of these hats very much. Why do not you create a thinner 13\" Byzance Dark HiHat for Cajon-Players?

I am also looking forward for a 20\" Meinl Byzance Ride usable in acoustic context, playable with Rods and Brushes. Not too loud, not a pure Jazz Ride, not a pure Dark Ride, with a separeted Bell-Sound. Unfortunately I didn\'t found a Meinl replacement for my Zildjian K Custom Dark Ride 20\" until yet.

I think mini chinas (8\"-12\") would be a great addition for all lines.

Thomas posted on Jul 01, 2009 - 18:11 PM

Personally, I would like to see a 15\" or 16\" Byzance Dark Hi-Hat or a 24\" Dark Ride

CW posted on Jul 01, 2009 - 21:04 PM

I think that a heavier crash for the extra dry byzance series would be excellent. Or a china for either of the darker byzance series.

Dion Ruehl posted on Jul 05, 2009 - 2:59 AM

Is there any chance of seeing a Byzance EXTRA Dry China? Something along the lines of a 22\" or 23\".
I\'d love to see the Single DRAGON Chinas come back.

sparkie posted on Jul 06, 2009 - 2:45 AM

hi norbert,

i would love to see a byzance dark light line, like a 22\'\' byznace dark light ride. i think that would be the only thing better then my current 20\'\' dark ride.

Hi Norbert & Co !)))

I just want to suggest a idea with new FX cymbal.

I call it QuarterRide (second name is Mutant Bell))))

This cymbal may be used by a lot of drummers who totally tired and bored use cowbells and other percussion stuff with pedals.

I have painted a ugly picture that will (i hope it\'s will :7 ) explain what i mean.

http://cs444.vkontakte.ru/u313266/55111706/x_460fc213.jpg

it must be a fat and loud cymbal.

also it can be used as second ride cymbal(when it placed into boom stand),with Ride and Bell zones.

Colin Hawkins posted on Jul 07, 2009 - 13:30 PM

I\'m not really sure if you are open to suggestions, but I really feel like the Byzance line is missing something in the china department. I would love to see an extra dry china or even a dark china. I had to fill my current line up with an istanbul agop dark china, but I would LOVE an extra dry byzance china, I think it would be great to have them in large and small sizes too, so we could purchase a 14\" to make a nice trashy stack out of or a big 24\" for a nice dry trashy sound :)

@ uwe, etienne, martin, thomas, cw, djon, sparkie, 2stix and colin:

It would be nice to see MB10 and Sound Caster \"Rock\" or heavy/power splashes, 10, and 12. Plus smaller chinas in the MB10, SCC and MB20 lines, like 12, 14 and 16, or something odd, like 13 and 15 chinas. Plus, MB10 19 power crash! Also, MB10 and sound caster 12 mini hi hats both power and soundwave. A heaiver splash in all lines is a must, same with smaller china options. Also, MB10 and sound caster bells, like the classic bells. This would be great!

AggressiveC posted on Jul 08, 2009 - 0:21 AM

I was thinking of some things I\'d like Meinl to add...

1. Bells! I love the Classics Bell, but how about adding some Soundcaster, Byzance, MB10, MB8 and MB20 bells!

2. I second ROMAN\'s idea... MB20 19\" Power Crash!

3. Bigger Bell Blast Rides!

4. Extra thin chinas in the MB20 department!

Thats all I have, but if anything else comes to mind I\'ll surely post!

I would like a thin 18-20\" china cymbal with the old Zildjian china boy \"High\" type of sound.

Sir Karibou posted on Jul 08, 2009 - 19:58 PM

I think that a 21\" light dark ride must be great !

other ideas: - As the Souncaster Fusion serie but with a dark finish in the middle of the cymbal and a traditionnal finish for the rest !
- A 21\" Dark bell ride (only a dark bell, very dry !)

Dion Ruehl posted on Jul 09, 2009 - 2:10 AM

I\'m 100% with Colin Hawkins

Another idea would be a line of Sterling splashes, bells & discs. I have a Sterling 10\" splash from the 80\'s... The crispness of the Sterling line is something that would acompany the likes of the Gen-X Filter Chinas & many more, for them bright fill in blemishess for Prog Rockers alike.

It\'s great that Meinl have something for all drummers... a Prog Rock line would be a massive seller I feel.

Wolfi aka MissdaRiddim posted on Jul 09, 2009 - 23:06 PM

It would be great if also you could create some cymbals that reproduce the sound of the 50ies, 60ies and 70ies... to get the pure vintage sound - I love that kind of cymbals sounds that you can hear on such old records e.g. by James Brown, Chaka Khan, Frank Sinatra, Jackson5, etc.

Cam Rycroft posted on Jul 13, 2009 - 16:23 PM

I agree with AggressiveC and ROMAN on the bells idea, the classic bells are fantastic, so imagine how great some bells in the SC or MB range would sound, just a thought.

Thanks guys,
Cam

dear all !
thanks for your valuable input.
some of the ideas you guys had we actually thought about too and are already confirmed to come out early next year.
as far as everything else, we\'ll look into your ideas. you never know, maybe some of them will make it too.

maceo posted on Jul 16, 2009 - 13:00 PM

i like to see/have bigger byzance hihats!

15 & 16\" extra dry and/or jazz-hats!

the fat-hat is cool, but to clean!

pleeease!

Binz posted on Jul 17, 2009 - 15:47 PM

Bells please!

Aidan posted on Aug 03, 2009 - 3:36 AM

I agree with everyone who has suggested a Byzance Dark Light set of cymbals, especially hihats. I\'d love to see some thinner Dark cymbals.

Another thing... Amuns! I was very sad to see them go. The Amun 14\" Dry Hats were the first Meinl cymbals that I ever bought, after trying every hihat in the store, and specifically having the salesman keep the prices from me.

norbert posted on Aug 04, 2009 - 14:35 PM

@ aidan
from a production point-of-view, its extremely difficult to make thinner dark cymbals. you know, all other byzance series have at least one lathed surface. by lathing you finetune a cymbals weight. so you can make it thinner. dark series cymbals are not lathed. this means, you have to determine the exact weight during the casting process, which is extremely difficult to do. once the cymbal is lathed, you cant make it thinner anymore. thats why dark cymbals tend to be rather thick instead of medium to thin.
as far as amun - have you tried our new mb8 series already? those are made from the same alloy using a similar production process.

Erik posted on Aug 06, 2009 - 18:05 PM

maybe thinner mb20 cymbals?

Jammie posted on Aug 13, 2009 - 18:45 PM

I would like to see maybe a byzance extra-Dry splash

Travis Ferguson posted on Sep 09, 2009 - 20:55 PM

A Generation-X ride above 18\" make it funky.. stick a few jingles on the underside near the edge.. brilliant finish... respectable bell...

Travis Ferguson posted on Sep 09, 2009 - 20:57 PM

Officiate the Bell/Splash hi-hat configuration. in this manner we don\'t have to ad-lib, sticking a Classics bell underneath an mb8 Splash... you get the idea.

Travis Ferguson posted on Sep 09, 2009 - 21:17 PM

On all Cymbals, of all lines, excepting maybe the Jazz line.. they\'re exempt for that style of playing.. Improve the Bell Size. I have no idea how long that take to engineer a more prominant bell on all the cymbals while still keeping the REST of the cymbal sonically matched to it\'s original sound - as per EVERY line, but you guys are on the up and up. You can figure it out. Not once have I been displeased with anything you\'ve manufactured.. excepting the Soundcaster Fusion China... didnt like it too much... but everything else is Primo!

Wolfi aka MissdaRiddim posted on Sep 12, 2009 - 13:02 PM

...ah, another thing that came to my mind:

Smaller hihats in the MB20 Series... maybe a 13\" Heavy and 13\" Medium Hihat (with and without soundwaves)...
In general I can imagine that thinner models in the MB20 series would probably sound great... medium crashes, medium thin and thin crashes...

and by the way... is there already a Byzance 21\" Heavy Ride?

greetings by Wolfi

Wolfi aka MissdaRiddim posted on Sep 20, 2009 - 13:19 PM

...ah - one more thing ...

an MB20 21\" Heavy Bell Ride is still missing ;-)
that would be great!

greetingssssssssssssssss

Jammie posted on Dec 11, 2009 - 22:26 PM

It\'s probably a bit late, but another idea has struck me : )
It involves taking Benny Greb\'s inspirations from the sand ride and using them to create Hihats, like the way you did it with the Rodney Holmes\' spectrum ride and Hihats.
I think this would be brilliant
thanks
Jammie : )
