EPISODE 4 – THE INTERVIEW WITH THE ORIGINAL JAMES BROWN DRUMMERS CLYDE AND JABO

Welcome back to our interview series with Clyde Stubblefield and Jabo Starks. I hope that you have enjoyed watching the previous episodes so far and here we are now with our newest one.

The longer the interview lasted Clyde and Jabo started to feel more comfortable and therefore opened up more and more. This episode covers many different topics about their time with James Brown: Being used for recordings, talking about the life on the road with James, financial circumstances on tour, demanding respect, equipment trucks and tour busses, and dealing with James Brown’s managers. I had to watch it several times in order to get all the little things they say here.

Thanks to Benny Greb or his great testimonial in the beginning.

Stay tuned for our next episode. Meanwhile, enjoy this video.

Oh man.... I've sensed some of this from episode 1 throughout. Lotta backstabbin' and double standard going on in the business and it hurts me to see, how some in that business felt and feel entitled to take advantage of their much depended on collaborators, right to this day. Makes the line "Give the drummer some" appear in a much different - albeit anticipated - light. Huh. However, I get the feelin' that Mr. Starks isn't holding any grudges any more, which I take as a huge accomplishment of his own personal evolution along with how he confronted JB from the get-go. That's the - pardon my French - shitty aspect of the business: To have to deal with so many small and less-than-benign minds pulling the strings and running the numbers. Oh well... guess, one has to learn how to best put up with it. And this is where Mr. Starks has another shining moment where I'm concerned.
