Meinl R&D Concept Model: Mike Johnston’s 2451 Prototype Ride

Quite some time ago Mike approached me with an idea for a ride. This is what we’ve made for him. It’s not available anywhere officially.

We are curious to know what you like or don’t like about it, and if you like us to introduce it to our line-up?

Thanks for your feedback.

I think this ride is really beautiful, controlled and I think versatile. Great job!!

YES! This is exactly, what i was looking for... I love the "crashy" sound of it. Dirty, but still well-defined and responsive... Sounds like the ride is kind of feeling you as well.

I would love to see this become a canon cymbal in Meinl's lineup next year. The wash on the 2451 is remarkable, and the crash makes me happy in the silliest manner. The bell is actually not that bad, and I normally prefer bells that have more presence (like the bell on the Sand Ride). I still see myself getting the 22" Meinl Byzance Dark Ride (my dream Ride), but this would be an excellent addition to anyone's collection.

Sounds great i like the cut through bell..

Great sound for a crash-ride - or should I say "crashable ride" -, very good combination of definition + wash, but as with every cymbal, always a compromise. I would go for a 22"

Personally I prefer the original Extra Dry ride because that's just more my style. That being said, this prototype sounds extremely tasty, the crash in particular is beautiful and amazing.

I think that this ride is really beautiful and versatile! A perfect balance of dirtyness and washiness, really great for groove-based rythms, such as gospel, hip hop and funky situations! The size is good too, maybe adding 22" would be perfect... You should do a whole series based on this concept, like Benny Greb's Vintage Series!!!

Looeeegee posted on Jun 10, 2013 - 12:39 PM

I think it would sound nicer as a 20", maybe brighten it up a bit. It sounds very similar to my 22" sand ride.

Edgar posted on Jun 10, 2013 - 12:56 PM

Love it! I like that flavor. Mostly when crashing.

Richard Childs posted on Jun 10, 2013 - 12:58 PM

I loved the way the wash just dropped away when Mike went back to playing on top after crashing it. Would be perfect for me playing a mix of jazz and rock in the same gig. I'm planning on getting a 20" extra dry china anyway and this would go very nicely

Absolutely love it.

Love this. Looking to jump into the dry series and would love to add this.

I think I like the extra dry more personally, but I love the crashing ability of the 2451 more, even though I feel like the bell is a little weak for my taste I would love to play one of these.

Krish posted on Jun 10, 2013 - 16:14 PM

I love the crashing nature of 2451.. but to ride i would still prefer the 20inch coz of its prominent sound.. If you guys can manage to bring that ride sound from 20 and crashing nature of the 21 with the bell sound of 21 - Thats my sound!!!!! But its great sounding by itself.. like what mike said. its a different flavor!!!

William posted on Jun 10, 2013 - 16:50 PM

I think the 2451 sounds great. It would fit perfectly into my playing style!

I personally think this cymbal is a wonderful cymbal, the amount of wash, crashability, and bell it's has is PERFECT, if I could have this cymbal, I sure as heck would, for ANYTHING! I'm also loving it's versatility , and the fact that it sounds amazing as a ride AND a crash cymbal . I'd love to see this in Meinl's lineup, especially since I play exclusively Meinl cymbals! Way to go guys!

Marc posted on Jun 10, 2013 - 21:44 PM

Very nice sound! although I also like the definition from the extra dry series, I prefer the higher pitched bell.

Michael Garr posted on Jun 10, 2013 - 23:58 PM

If this becomes an actual cymbal, I will own one....if not several. It's the perfect mix between crashability and stick definition. What I've always looked for.

Joseph Dopke posted on Jun 11, 2013 - 2:46 AM

Love it! More hand hammering please! The definition achieved is fantastic!

Tony Gallagher posted on Jun 11, 2013 - 4:36 AM

Awesome!! When can we expect to see this in the line up? HAHA!!

Ted Jackson posted on Jun 12, 2013 - 17:55 PM

The bell molds into the cymbal very nicely. I would love to use this cymbal for sweeps from the riding part of the cymbal to the bell.

Jeff Irizarry posted on Jun 13, 2013 - 2:37 AM

Wow! Count me in please, this cymbal seems fantastic, can't wait to play it!

Thomas Jeffrey posted on Jun 16, 2013 - 21:01 PM

Sounds incredible! I could definitely see myself getting into one of these. I love the washy crash and the blending between bell and the rest of the cymbal.

Dante Espinoza posted on Jun 18, 2013 - 8:23 AM

Hey guys I also use the 20" extra dry ride. Also I like to crash on my ride to but still like the dry sound so i think this cymbal is amazing. But like Mike said both are great cymbals. I personally like the stick defenition and bell on the 20in but the wash on the 21 is fantastic.

Eddie James posted on Jun 19, 2013 - 6:24 AM

Yes. There is a place in the Meinl lineup. Why? 1. It is sonically different from anything else out there. 2. It is different on paper (marketable). 3. A Mike Johnston signature! Yes! My dream cymbal has so far been the 20" Extra Dry ride. Its a little washy, but a small piece of tape underneath or some moon gel on top tames it down. I play a very minimalistic set up and often double it as a crash. Heck, I might have to make room for the 2451, why wouldn't you want both of these colors on your palette. If these cymbals are your thing, then they're your thing. Thanks Mike, you're amazing.

Joshua Champ posted on Aug 27, 2013 - 18:11 PM

This would be absolutely incredible if you guys made this ride available for purchase. I'd love this ride so much!! Please make this happen.

This cymbal sounds really good,...but his transition ride sounds phenomenal! I've looked around to find additional info on it. I seriously want to purchase that ride. I play byzance fast hats, byzance crashes, and currently go backbajd forth between a 22" mb20 & an old vintage no name 22" thin ride. I would love to have the transition ride so I would not have to switch back and forth.

Ivan Castellanos posted on Oct 24, 2013 - 17:23 PM

I like the sound of this cymbal, its really versatile and that's what I need since I normally use my ride as a crash due to the small space I have on the gigs. If this goes out on the market I'll buy it immediately. Please Meinl, make it available for us, or at least put out a limited edition of it, I'm really interested as well as almost all the people above!

Please make this bad boy available! I want to add this to my kit so bad!

Kuba posted on Dec 02, 2013 - 12:09 PM

The most striking difference to my ears is the amount of wash that's spot on. Not to too much but quite a lot for a dry cymbal. It's a beauty.

Alex posted on Dec 12, 2013 - 19:35 PM

Holy S$%*..... i love it!! ITS TOO GOOD.

Keep it up Meinl.

Simon Klejnstrup posted on Jan 05, 2014 - 16:32 PM

Holy Moly!!

PLEASE release this cymbal! It's what i've been looking for all my life!

Please, Meinl! Please!
