The Art of the Piano Trio
The name "Piano Trio" usually refers to a group comprising a pianist, a double bass player and a drummer. The pianist is usually considered the leader of these trios and they are usually named after him. I love piano trios because there is room for air and musically improvised art. It holds an undieniable fascination.
Our Danish artist Morten Lund is currently on tour with jazz piano giant Stefano Bollani. Morten is a phenomenal drummer who signed with us last year. And because there is so much air, the sound of the cymbals play a significant role in the overall sound of a jazz trio.
Over the last year, we have made some nice custom cymbals for Morten which he is using on tour with the Stefano Bollani Trio (all Byzance series):
- 14" Sand Hat top and a 14" Dark top used as bottom
- 20" Vintage Crash with a 8" Traditional Splash
- our new 22" Extra Dry Thin Ride
- a sandblasted (!) 22" Jazz Big Apple Ride - custom made
- a 18" Vintage Trash Crash
I have started to dig Morten's playing more and more, especially how he uses his cymbals in a musical setting like a jazz trio. Just look up "Stefano Bollani Trio" on youtube and you'll find many great concert videos.
