Gergo Borlai - Having Fun in the Studio

a few days ago i made a statement on my facebook profile that i am looking for unique, authentic, and musical drummers. well, i found one. it is my pleasure to introduce you to gergo borlai from budapest, hungary. gergo has joined the meinl family in july 2008. welcome once again gergo. a few days ago i got a cd from him with a couple of video clips he made of himself.
now i have to say that hungary is not particularly known for its great drummers. many of you have probably never been there (me myself have only been there once in 2004). gergo is hungary's leading drummer and is busy all over the place there and in other balkan/eastern europe countries.
i was talking about unique and musical drummers earlier. to me personally i find gergo's playing refreshingly different in many ways, extremely musical and last but not least, worldclass level.
hungary should be known for its drummer gergo. that's why i'm spreading the word about him. i will keep on adding the other three over the next couple of weeks. so stay tuned and enjoy his playing as much as i did.

Finally somebody appreciates his skills. I have seen him "in action" a few times, he is great. I like his style. And a little piece of advice. When shooting videos of him , focus sometimes on his foot/feet :) his work down there is amazing ! And I personally think, he utterly knocks spots off some world-known drummers. I highly recommend going to his concert ! Frankly, I suppose he surprised me even more then Dave Weckl when I saw him. If you have a chance to go to a few shows, pick different bands. You'll be gazing in astonishment !

Gergo is a very nice player with lots of musical ability. Obviously, coming from this part of the world gives him much experience in the rhythms of that region and he shows his skills with these rhythms beautifully.
I feel that chops alone do not suffice in the long run. What you do with them is the critical element. Gergo can place himself with my other favorite drummers because of his ability to make good musical choices. These qualities are the ones every band is looking for, someone who lays it down with strong personality, total technical dedication and always with the musical outcome as the prime goal.
